Four Seasons

Candlemas Pledges

From the Living in Season Newsletter, 1/22/07:

I always take the month of January off, to dream about what I want to do for the new year. Then on Candlemas, I make a pledge, a solemn promise to undertake some year-long activity that will deepen my connection with nature and spirit or expand my creativity. (Read more here.)

In previous years, I've promised to take one day off, to take photographs on all the seasonal holidays, to write a haiku a day. I wrote about some of my previous pledges in my newsletter last year.

If you feel inclined, I invite you to make a pledge for the year and make it public by posting it here. Your pledges will be visible all year so you can remind yourself of what you pledged. Also other people will know of your pledge, which may offer an extra measure of accountability.

When thinking of what you want to pledge, look first for something you've already decided, without even realizing you've done so. I suggest making only one pledge. A long list can be overwhelming; one pledge helps make your priorities crystal clear.

May you enjoy the opportunity to start the new year fresh,
Waverly Fitzgerald

Email us with your Candlemas Pledge and we will post it here.

Freckles & Me write:

I pledge to keep my newly discoverd inner child safe from all harm. I will hold her hand, dance with her in puddles of rain; wish with her on stars. We will cuddle and color trees, apple blossom pink, if we choose to. No longer will she be afraid of laughing, smiling, hugging. We have finally found each other, once more, after 72 years of being hidden away. We are truly blessed.

I am a photographer living in a new city with a new camera which I haven't used because of all sorts of undefined and defined fears and uncertainties. My pledge is to take at least one photograph a day with this camera and to allow a story to develop from Candlemas 2007 to Candlemas 2008.

So mote it be!!!

Joanna from Washington state writes:

I started working on my Gaian Tarot in February 2001. I'm now into my seventh year. I'm not sure I would have taken on the project if I'd known it would take so long, so it's probably a good thing I didn't know!

I pledge to finish the artwork for the deck this year. So shall it be!
